Approximately from the second week of September on, when the leaves colour warns us “autumn is coming”, the deer rutting season starts. It’s time to pass on the genes to the next generations, or at least try to. To this end, the adult stags, with their antlers ready to fight, challenge the other males and show themselves off. So, they start their guttural bellows known as rutting.
Best time of the day to listen to the deer rutting is night. Certainly, some stags keep bellowing a few hours in the morning, but night hours are the most spectacular. Making the most of dusk and dawn hours, we go to our observation spots from where we listen to the stags rutting and, with some luck, enjoy their presence.

WHERE WE GO TO ENJOY DEER RUTTING
Ponga Nature Park and Biosphere Reserve, in Eastern Asturias, close to Picos de Europa, hides a treasure in the shape of a beech forest, one of the widest in Spain and Europe. A magic place where rutting echoes among its trees.
HOW WE ORGANISE THE RUTTING
We drive close to some of our observation spots where, besides listening to the stags bellowing, we might see them emerge from the thick foerst. If you are staying in Cangas de Onís, Amieva or Ponga, we pick you up in our way to enjoy the rut. The journey beggins before dawn, so that we reach the observation post before the first light of the day. In the evening, we head to the same spots and enjoy the rut at dusk, returning when the light fades.
WHAT WE NEED TO BRING TO THE RUT
Since we relish the rutting at dawn or sunset, we need to wear not too brightly coloured warm clothes to avoid low temperature and humidity, mountain shoes and water. Don’t forget your camera. We provide you with front torches to light the way. In addition, we provide you with binoculars and spotting scope to enjoy the rutting even more.
WHEN WE CAN ENJOY THE RUTTING SEASON
The deer rutting season starts around the second week in September, depending on each year weather condictions. It lasts for, approximately, one month and we make the trip every day along this rutting time.
SOME TIPS TO ENJOY THE RUT WATCHING ACTIVITY PLENTIFULLY
The stags are completely focused on mating along the rutting season, which makes us easier to spot them. Even so, we suggest you to speak as little as possible and not to smoke during the event. This way we avoid giving away our presence and we are able to fully enjoy the rut.
HOW MUCH THE RUTRING ACTIVITY COSTS
The rut watching activity lasts for around 4 hours and costs 30€ if we go at dawn or dusk. Given that some some people are very fond of the rut, we have included the possibility of going out in the morning and repeating in the evening. In this case, the price is 50€.
The mínimum number of people required for the trip is 2. We work with small groups, so that you can enjoy the rutting activity even more.
